Chapter Six
I decided the damage had been done and was content to cuddle up to Logan’s bare back all night as the storm raged overhead. Several times I woke in the darkness, the unfamiliar heat pouring off Logan disturbing me. At just after midnight, I woke to find Logan had enveloped me with his arms and I was sweating from his body heat. I kicked off the blankets, listened to the wind howl, and drifted back off to sleep without disturbing him. At three I woke at the sound of extra-loud thunder. Logan had rolled to his back, but his thigh was pinning down one of my legs and his hand was resting on my stomach.
Since I was awake, I took the opportunity to roll out from under that heavy hand, creep to the bathroom, empty my bladder, and check the weather radar and stats. It had been a rough night with plenty of rain and some large wind gusts recorded at the various weather stations around the metro area. The rain looked as if it would ease in the next three hours, so I was sure I would be called up.
I climbed back into the bed and slipped under Logan’s limp arm, positioning it so it was a little lower than previous, and immediately fell back asleep.
As predicted, the first call of the morning came through before the sun was up. A tree had come down through a carport and smashed a car. I advised the customer of my rate, told them to take plenty of pictures for the insurance company, and said I’d be there in twenty minutes. I’d already had my first coffee. Logan wandered out, still in his boxers.
“Are we on?” he growled sleepily.
I pushed a steaming coffee mug in his direction and pointed to the bacon and eggs I had in the frying pan.
“Go get dressed. It will be bacon and egg rolls to go. I’m going outside to hitch up.”
And we didn’t have time to discuss our personal relationship. We worked hard, pushing through the jobs and scuttling off to the next. With two vehicles to drive, we didn’t even get the chance to chat while we moved jobs. It was mostly sawing fallen trees and sending them through the chipper. I more than appreciated Logan’s strength as he hefted the large branches and carried them away.
Lunch was a sandwich eaten while driving to the next client. Rest was unheard of. The rain came in showers, but we didn’t stop for it. While Logan approached the customers at the end of the jobs to get payment via my mobile EFTPOS machine, I was on the phone, ringing back missed calls and teeing up the next jobs into the next two days.
Finally we made it back to my house as the sun was setting, but the work wasn’t over. I had to prepare for the next day by checking the equipment, cleaning it down, and readying it. I lobbed the house keys at Logan.
“Go and get in the shower.
